Oil Mediums

To support its extensive line of Handmade Oil Colors, Williamsburg offers a complementary line of tradition-based mediums and other essential painting tools.

Cold Pressed Linseed Oil — Extracted without heat or chemicals, this genuine cold pressed linseed oil increases the flow, transparency, and gloss of oil paints. It can also be used when grinding your own pigments by hand or as an ingredient in other mediums.

Holbein Purified Linseed Oil

Fat Medium — Designed for use with fat-over-lean oil painting techniques, this handcrafted medium makes oil paints fatter, richer, and glossier. It also helps increase paint film adhesion and decreases drying time for oil colors. Recommended for use in the later stages of painting.

Schmincke Mussini Oil Mediums

Schmincke Mussini Mediums are specially formulated for use with resin-rich oils such as Schmincke Mussini Oils.

Medium 1 — Containing a mixture of safflower oil, synthetic resin, and mineral spirits, it thins oil colors while having a minimal effect on drying time and gloss level. It is highly recommended for underpainting.

CAS AlkydPro Mediums are a perfect complement to AlkydPro Oil Colors. Great for speeding the drying of both alkyds and traditional oil paints, they can also be used to extend colors, build texture, create impasto effects, and much more.

Impasto Medium — This transparent medium has a heavier consistency that retains its shape for impasto painting techniques. Use it to build structure by applying it directly and covering it with paint, or mixing it with paint on the palette. It dries thoroughly to allow the building of a surface up to a ¼" per application. It also works as an extender and can be diluted with solvent if needed.

CAS AlkydPro Mediums

Acrylic Medium

Gloss Medium — Mix with acrylic paint for a transparent Gloss finish. Permanent, water-resistant when dry, do not use as final glaze or varnish.

Sargent Art Acrylic Mediums

Clear Painting Medium — Chroma Atelier Clear Painting Medium is amid-viscosity medium that lets you dilute acrylic paint to a smoother consistency without altering its sheen. The high water content extends working time without the need to use a water sprayer.

Chroma Atelier Interactive Mediums

Watercolor Medium

This high-tech version of a traditional medium helps washes flow more evenly and adhere better to hard-sized surfaces.

QoR Watercolor Synthetic OX Gall Medium

This general purpose medium increases the transparency and flow of your watercolors. It also increases gloss and saturation. QoR Watercolor Medium

Applying this medium to your paper before laying down colors makes lifting techniques easier. It also works effectively when applied between washes.

QoR Watercolor Lift Aid Medium

QoR Watercolor Ground —This fluid acrylic primer creates a porous surface similar to hot press paper on many different materials, including canvas and panel. It dries to an absorbent, lightfast, and flexible surface that withstands repeated lifting and scrubbing. Suitable for a full range of watercolor techniques, including washing and staining, it can also be used to return stained areas to an absorbent white surface.

QoR Light Dimensional Watercolor Ground — When applied to virtually any substrate, this lightweight white paste creates a super-absorbent, sponge-like surface. It can be laid down in a smooth, thin layer, or built up to create ridges, peaks, and other interesting textures. The resulting surface allows washes to spread quickly, while accommodating fine lines and details as well. Dropping color into lightly wetted areas creates beautiful blooms.

QoR Cold Press Watercolor Ground — Applying this ground to a variety of substrates creates a surface that has the appearance of rough handmade paper. It's especially ideal for dry brush techniques. A smoother finish can also be achieved by skimming the surface with a wet palette knife during application.
